Big earners, big taxes.
I’m self-employed and this year my taxable income will be over £150,000. I started my own company in 2002 with £1,000 I’d saved from a previous job.
I’m 24 years old and went to a normal grant-maintained school in Staffordshire. My social life is non-existent, I spend all my time working and I don’t go on holiday, I don’t have the time. I’m busy building up my business and working hard.
I’m certainly not spending my time sipping champagne on a yacht!
I work 13 hour days, seven days a week. I have quite a nice car but it’s not a Porsche or an Aston Martin. I’m certainly not spending my time sipping champagne on a yacht!

Australia’s outback
The entrance to one of Australia’s most contentious plots of real estate is marked by a small road sign and a burnt-out car – its doors buckled, its windscreen smashed in and its mangled side emblazoned with the words NO DUMP spelt out in huge capital letters with silver tape that shimmers in the outback sun.

Air Force One
“Don’t leave the hotel without a secret service escort,” a worried woman from the State Department told me. “It’s dangerous out there!”
I snuck out like a truant schoolboy with my friend Alec Russell, who then worked for the Telegraph. We braved the bombers, kidnappers and assorted enemies of freedom to find carpets and kebabs and came back to the hotel in one piece.
